NEW YORK._ The founding businessman and one of the founders of the organized taxi industry in New York, Jaime Vargas, auto insurance brokerage and director of his own driving school, Vargas Drive School in Upper Manhattan, which serves taxi drivers for decades urged drivers to be massively vaccinated against the coronavirus (COVID-19) after being included as part of the priority sectors to receive doses in the centers opened by the state and the city.
Vargas said that as many taxi drivers as possible should be vaccinated to protect their lives from the lethal virus, recalling that about 20 died at the peak of the pandemic, including five who were clients of his agency.
The businessman who was also president of the New York Taxi Drivers Association, the first entity in which industry drivers were organized in the city, recalled that Mayor Bill de Blasio and Governor Andrew Cuomo have authorized that they can be vaccinated in this new stage.
“Taxi drivers are obviously essential workers on the front lines, and it is very important that their role in the pandemic for the benefit of our communities has been recognized by the authorities,” added Vargas.
He explained that according to Governor Cuomo, it does not matter how old a taxi driver is to be vaccinated.
He called on the mayor to speed up the vaccination of taxi drivers, following the governor’s line, who left it up to the mayors, whether or not to vaccinate taxi drivers in the cities they run.
Vargas’ agency, “J&J Brokerage” located on Saint Nicholas Avenue between 174th and 175th streets in Upper Manhattan, said that all taxi drivers should take the opportunity to not stop getting vaccinated.
“Vaccines are proving their effectiveness, because those who are vaccinated have less chance or risk of being infected,” he said.
He pointed out that the lives of New York taxi drivers, especially the liveries that serve the poorest communities, are very valuable and must be preserved.
