Women’s rights organization Bureau Clara Wichmann wants to demand compensation from Allergan over the company’s silicone implants. The foundation wants women who still wear the drug’s now banned implants not to have to pay for them themselves if they want to get rid of them.
Bureau Clara Wichmann, together with patient organization SVS, calls on women to report to enforce compensation. An estimated 60 thousand Dutch women still wear Allergan implants.
According to the organizations, 52 Dutch women have developed a form of lymphoma from breast implants, of which about 70 percent of the cases involved Allergan breast implants. These were taken off the market in 2018 after the relationship between lymphoma and the implants was established.
“The consequences are terrible for women who developed lymphoma as a result, but the tens of thousands of women with these implants are still in uncertainty, shame, pain and fear,” says Marga van Amersfoort, chair of SVS. “There are also high costs involved in removing the implants and reconstructing the breasts, which women now largely pay for themselves.”

The claims foundation wants Allergan to pay for removal operations but also for “financial compensation for the pain, suffering and fear that result”. The claim can amount to 512 million euros, writes de Volkskrant this morning.
Breast implants can also cause other health problems. from a report of the RIVM on side effects of implants, it appeared last year that more complaints had been received in 2019 than the year before. The most commonly reported complaints are fatigue, joint pain and pain in the chest(s), but also difficulty concentrating and memory loss.
