Foundation for Covid Victims: Creating Monuments and Promoting Healthcare in Suriname

The Foundation for Covid Victims was set up last year with the aim of managing and setting up monuments in memory of the COVID-19 victims in Suriname.

The foundation also aims to improve, promote and positively influence healthcare through training, education and information.

The inspiration for establishing this foundation came from the chairman, who also lost a close person to the COVID-19 disease. In a conversation with Dagblad Suriname, the chairman of the foundation, Mr. Anwar Moenne, gave further explanation about this monument.

Earlier this year, a nameplate was unveiled by the chairman and some board members on the Flustraat in Paramaribo, where the monument will be located. The realization of this monument was supported by the district commissioner, the Ministry of Public Works, the Culture Directorate, and the Ministry of Health.

The financing of this monument will be done through the first fundraising project. “We started fundraising for the monument last Monday”. There is a donation box that will make a round in known places. “People can also approach us through the social media channels of the foundation, so that the community can also contribute to the creation of this monument,” says Mr. Moenne.

The chairman of the foundation indicates that the public has responded positively to the establishment of this monument. The foundation will also continue to provide information and run training sessions. “People with underlying diseases have a greater chance of contracting Covid, which is why it is important to train people and teach them how to work on a healthy lifestyle”. Mr. Moenne indicates that the monument will have a special impact on the community. “One should be able to expect everything. It is a disease that nobody knew about and nobody knew how to deal with it. So you always have to be ready,” says the chairman.

The significance of the monument’s design is the depiction of people who were and are still affected by Covid. It is a pentagonal (pentagon) platform symbolizing the five largest population groups in Suriname and the five elements that make up human life. Five people have been pulled up inside, to represent the relatives who have been snatched from life while reaching out to their loved ones. This monument symbolizes a strong emotional longing for the coexistence of the Covid victims and their loved ones.

Suriname has to date 82,588 registered cases of Covid and 1408 registered deaths due to the virus.
