The age of the remains is about ten thousand years. At the time of death, the child was only two months old.
Scientists from Colorado State University have discovered the oldest ritual burial of a little girl in Europe in a cave in northern Italy. An article about this was published in the scientific journal Scientific Reports, the agency reported. TASS.
In the Armagh Veyrana cave, which is located in the foothills of the Alps, they found confirmation that the first Europeans, at least ten thousand years ago, buried children with honors, like deceased adults.
Professional archaeologists drew attention to the cave after the “black diggers” found the tools of the Neanderthals in it. The discovered burial belonged to the era in which the territory of Italy was already inhabited by Cro-Magnons.
A girl was buried in the grave, who died for unknown reasons in the second month of her life. Her body was adorned with a necklace made of shells, and nearby was a talisman made from the claws of an eagle and other ritual objects.
Anthropologists concluded that fellow tribesmen treated the deceased with the same respect as adults. This casts doubt on the notion that in the past, young children were not perceived by others as full-fledged personalities.
