Police are investigating the death of a man in his 60s who was found dead in the water off Cofete beach on the island of Fuerteventura – which belonged to the Canary Islands – on Friday night.

The rescue operation was carried out with the help of a rescue helicopter, which retrieved the body about 100 meters from the shore.
According to the emergency services coordination center (CECOES), they were informed about 14.45 am about a man lying face down towards the water near the coast of Phajara, in the south of the island.
Rescue crews transported the body to the town of Morro Jable, where paramedics pronounced the man dead on arrival.
The Guardia Civil is leading the investigation, and an autopsy will be carried out to clarify the identity and cause of death.
The circumstances surrounding the death are not yet known.
