Værøy municipality in Lofoten – known for chalk-white beaches with azure water and majestic rock formations.
Now something completely different is stealing the attention: A foul-smelling discharge on the shore.
Asbjørn Myklebust says so. The 72-year-old is a permanent resident of the island municipality, where he also has a holiday home. It is at the latter place that the idyll has now been broken – following emissions from a newly started fish oil factory.
– According to the factory, there should be a zero-emission factory with no smell and no discharge into the water, but now it has happened twice, Myklebust tells Dagbladet.
It was Nordland newspaper who first reported the smelly news.

– A foul-smelling porridge
Myklebust describes the discharge as a greasy, yellowish-white porridge. The stench is supposed to be absolutely extreme.
– In the beginning it smelled so bad that you simply wanted to vomit, says the northerner.
He considers himself lucky, who only has a holiday home in the area of the spill, and therefore has another place to stay, while the smell is at its worst.
– But there are three houses with permanent residents, and it is tragic, he says, and describes how the neighbors have to close the windows to escape the horrible smell.
– Can you describe what it smells like?
– You don’t understand how bad it is. It might smell like rotten cod liver oil.
Come up from the sewers
– Only pure fish oil
The 72-year-old believes that the factory has shown little willingness to clean up after itself, but says that crews have now arrived to clean up the spill.
Avisa Nordland has been in contact with the chairman of Lofoten Biomarine AS, Tommy Torvanger.
– It’s nothing very good. Right now, the factory is in the final phase of being completed after start-up. We have discovered that a mistake has been made in how things are connected. It was the most recent discharge that enabled us to locate the fault, he explains to the newspaper.
Torvanger says that they stopped all production and dismantled everything after they became aware of the spill.
– Fortunately, only pure fish oil has come out, so it does no harm to animal and bird life, says the chairman of the board to the newspaper.
