It all started from a great desire that here in Tallinn we also have a place like “Fotografiska” in Stockholm, where there is such a cool museum, where you can see the big names and surnames of the world of art and photography. It is now Stockholm’s number one brand, overtaking even very popular museums such as [modernās mākslas muzeju] Moderneven the Vaasa Museum and the like.

At first it was a very, very naive desire, a determined question to ourselves: why shouldn’t we have such a place ourselves? The Fotografiska brand itself is known for wanting to show that it is a different museum than we are used to, and different in many ways. First of all, we are a private museum, and thus we want to show that art and culture can also be administered from private management, and this is possible at the same high level as state-run art institutions. Secondly, “Fotografiska” does not mean “only” exhibitions, it is a social gathering place, a cafe, a shop and a restaurant.

It was clear from our inception that it all had to play together and then bring in enough traffic and revenue for us to run it comfortably. And it was this aspect that appealed to us and convinced us. When we started negotiations with Fotografiska in Stockholm, it turns out that they had already thought about opening their own branch, but had not come to a concrete answer as to where exactly.
The decision to expand in our direction was not absolutely monolithic, there was also enough uncertainty and reflection, but in the end our Swedish colleagues decided: well, let’s “leave” Stockholm, if we are so famous and doing so well here.
