Fortuna Düsseldorf Knocks FC St. Pauli Out in Dramatic DFB Cup Quarterfinals

What a roller coaster ride: FC St. Pauli saved itself in the last second after being twice behind in a penalty shootout. But there Fortuna has the better end for itself.01/30/2024 | 5:59 minutes

Fortuna Düsseldorf reached the semi-finals of the DFB Cup for the first time in 28 years after a dramatic penalty shootout, knocking FC St. Pauli out of the competition.

Keeper Kastenmeier saves two penalties

Fortuna goalkeeper Florian Kastenmeier saved the shots from Maurides and Marcel Hartel. Hartel failed twice and the first attempt was repeated. Vincent Vermeij (38th minute/foul penalty) and Ao Tanaka (99th) had previously scored for Fortuna and enabled their club to receive a bonus of 3.45 million euros.

Second division leaders St. Pauli missed their first semi-final appearance since 2006. The two equalizing goals by Hartel (60th/penalty) and Carlo Boukhalfa (120th+1) had no effect.

St. Pauli coach has to go to the stands

St. Pauli coach Fabian Hürzeler saw yellow-red in extra time and watched the first competitive defeat of the season like the 29,546 fans at the Millerntor from the stands.

:Hertha and the longing for the final

After emotional weeks, second division team Hertha BSC wants to move into the cup semi-finals on Wednesday. The game is against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the sold-out Olympic Stadium.

Düsseldorf coach Daniel Thioune was thrilled with the victory in the cup thriller at FC St. Pauli – but not with the casual execution of the decisive penalty:

Completely inappropriate, I’m not a fan of it and I don’t think it’s respectful towards the opponent either.

Daniel Thioune, coach Düsseldorf

Thioune said on ZDF about his player Christos Tzolis.

Elfmeter-Tor pen “Doll”

He was the last to score with a so-called “Panenka” in the 4-3 penalty shootout. The Czech Antonin Panenka gently lobbed the ball into the goal in the 1976 European Championship final and has since found imitators again and again.

Thioune said he was “incredibly happy” about the victory. “But not about the manner” of the last penalty. If Tzolis hadn’t scored, he would probably have had “relatively long ears” from him, the coach added. “Now I have to take it. Then maybe I won’t scold him.”
