Together with last year’s introduction of Unreal Engine 5, developers from Epic Games have confirmed that it will be used by Fortnite from 2021. It was quite an expected promise given the importance of the game itself and the technology, which is still very important for Epic. And it’s definitely nice to see that it has actually been met despite all the challenges that not only the video game industry is facing. Fortnite is the first title to power Unreal Engine 5 since the start of Chapter 3, and is most likely why new features have been added to the game.
With the arrival of Chapter 3, @FortniteGame development has flipped to Unreal Engine 5.
We’re excited to share this journey with you and are working to make this the best experience possible for the entire Fortnite community.

“We have switched development to Unreal Engine 5. We are excited to be on this path with you. We are working to make the entire Fortnit community get the most out of it, ”said the developers. However, they did not only reap praise when there is a certain sobering up in the ranks of many players. The assumption that the new engine will automatically bring dramatic progress in graphics processing is unfortunately odd – it will always depend on the textures, the LOD system, lighting and other important elements that only they use the engine to run. In the case of Fortnit, for example, weather whims or other background changes that players do not see could have been incorporated into the game, but as a result, the game still looks essentially the same.
On the other hand, after the release of an unusually large patch, it is ready to be constantly improved in the future, which is the goal that the people of Epic Games are pursuing. This is evidenced, for example, by the apparent absence of Nanite technology, which takes care of accurate image rendering in places that the player / camera is currently looking at. In the case of Fortnit, however, the jumping of textures, resp. levels of detail as you zoom in and out of specific objects, but the developers themselves do not comment on the details yet.
However, it is certain that it is only a matter of time before the developers take us behind the curtain and in one of the videos or articles they will present in more detail what Unreal Engine 5 means for Fortnite, what has changed and what is waiting to be improved. The first game running on this engine then also serves as a harbinger of other titles, which have already confirmed the inclusion of UE 5. These include STALKER 2, Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2, Echoes of the End or the new BioShock.
