It was the summer of 2020 that Epic Games’ hugely popular Fortnite game was removed from the Apple App Store. The reason was that Epic had added an alternative payment system to get around Apple’s costs. As this violated Apple’s rules for the App Store, the game was taken down which was the start of legal proceedings and general debacle still ongoing.
Now, however, a change appears to be afoot as Epic CEO Tim Sweeney tweeted a New Year’s greeting with an image of the game and the text, “Next year on iOS!”
What is behind this alleged reintroduction on iOS is not clear, for example if Epic has decided not to fall within Apple’s rules or if Apple has opened a change of rules for the App Store, more information will come later. The battle between Apple and Epic is still ongoing, but Apple has had to open up alternative payment solutions in multiple places, which may be why Fortnite appears to be on its way back.
