Fort Liberty Soldiers Deployed for Hurricane Helene Recovery in North Carolina

1000 Soldiers Deployed to Support Hurricane Helene Recovery in North Carolina

One thousand soldiers from Fort Liberty’s Infantry Battalion Task Force have received the call to assist in recovery efforts for Hurricane Helene in western North Carolina. This deployment aims to provide crucial supplies, food, and water to isolated communities affected by the disaster.

Presidential Assurance of Support

During a recent visit to North Carolina, President Joe Biden reassured residents that the nation stands ready to support them in the aftermath of the hurricane. He emphasized that the deployed troops will collaborate closely with the North Carolina National Guard to ensure efficient delivery of critical resources.

Preparation Underway at Fort Liberty

Prior to the deployment, soldiers from the 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, part of the 82nd Airborne Division, prepared for weeks. These troops have been busy loading vehicles with equipment and supplies necessary for the upcoming mission.

As part of a synchronized effort, additional units—including engineers and Army communicators—remain on standby for deployment, ready to assist if more personnel are needed for recovery operations.

Coordination with National Guard and FEMA

Major General Robert Davis, the director of operations for U.S. Northern Command, has emphasized the importance of a coordinated effort. “We had the authority to take soldiers that are there at Liberty and put them under the command and control of United States Northern Command, coordinating closely with the National Guard and FEMA for optimal support,” he explained.

Current Efforts from the National Guard

The North Carolina National Guard has already made significant strides in providing relief. Utilizing CH-47 Chinook helicopters from other National Guard units, their efforts include debris removal, air lifts, search and rescue operations, and road clearance. This comprehensive support aims to assist those most affected by the storm.

Ongoing Recovery Operations

As of now, hundreds of National Guard personnel are actively helping with recovery efforts, working tirelessly to ensure communities have access to vital resources. Brigadier General Wes Morrison, who leads the North Carolina National Guard, emphasized the Guard’s commitment to supporting fellow citizens until all missions are complete, stating, “We are there, and the North Carolina Guard will be there for our citizens until the mission is finished.”

Support from U.S. Military Agencies

Along with the National Guard, various branches of the U.S. military are mobilizing for hurricane recovery operations. The U.S. Army and U.S. Navy, for instance, are deploying helicopters to transport personnel and supplies adversely affected by the flood. The U.S. Air Force is contributing search-and-rescue operations, while the Army Corps of Engineers is actively supporting necessary engineering efforts.
