“Fort Australia” opens its gates after nearly two years of covid isolation

There are 56 arriving international flights scheduled for tomorrow at Australia’s airports. That is much less than before the pandemic. Morrison says he hopes more flights from abroad will land in the near future.

Australia virtually went into lockdown in March 2020, hoping to fend off the coronavirus. In the initial phase, this seemed to work, in combination with a thorough testing and investigation policy. But the arrival of the omikron variant changed everything: Australia had to deal with tens of thousands of infections and dozens of deaths every day.

A total of 4,913 people have died from the corona virus in Australia. In the past two years, Australians were barely able to leave their own country, while foreigners were only admitted in exceptional circumstances.
