Leipzig player Emil Forsberg was chosen as midfielder of the year for the second consecutive year and for the fifth time in total in his career. The 31-year-old was a match winner in a national team that has had many injuries this year and failed in their attempt to change the game system to 4-3-3. And in the team of the Leipzig club it was so messy that Forsberg was close to changing clubs.
– It’s clear that the situation was not optimal there in August and the club knew it. But they assured me I will stay and that things will change, and then I stayed, he tells Aftonbladet.
“Both High and Low”
With a new manager, Leipzig reached the last 16 of the Champions League and are third in the Bundesliga.
On the Swedish Football Association website, Forsberg said about the year:
“2022 has been a special year in many ways. In the national team we have had both ups and downs, where you obviously feel disappointed with some missing results and a missed WC. At the same time, many new players have established themselves in the team and it seems that we have a positive feeling for 2023 after the victories against Mexico and Algeria”.
Kosovar Asllani receives the Midfielder of the Year award for the second time, the first time in 2017. She was also named Forward of the Year 2019.
“I am satisfied with the year”
This year Asllani changed clubs from Real Madrid to Milan. And in the EC this summer, she showed great effort as the national team reached the semi-finals.
“It has been a very intense and eventful year. Personally, I enjoyed playing football during the year and I think I have a strong year behind me both in the club and in the national team, even if we in the national team would have liked to reach all the way this summer. But on an individual level, I think I’ve performed well, I’m happy with the year,” he tells the association’s website.
The football year 2022 will be summarized in a TV broadcast on 27 December. Prior to the program, award winners in different categories are announced in advance. Later, on Easter Monday, this year’s strikers will be presented.
