Formula E takes a series of measures to cushion the shock

The International Federation (FIA) and the organizers of Formula E have adopted a series of measures to deal with the situation created by the coronavirus pandemic.

The goal is to “halve development costs” over the next two seasons.

Among the measures decided in particular is the postponement to the 2021/2022 season of the launch of the new generation of cars, called Gen2 EVO. The World Motor Sport Council (CMSA) has also ratified the extension of the approval period for racing cars.

The teams will therefore be able to either introduce a new car for the next two seasons, or keep their current models for the next season before having a new one approved for the following season. “In these difficult times, adjusting structural costs in motorsports is a priority to ensure their viability,” said FIA president Jean Todt, quoted in a statement from the organization.

Five ePrixes have already been canceled this season: Sanya (China), Rome, Paris, Seoul and Jakarta. The next Formula E race on the program at this point is the Berlin ePrix on June 21.
