Good news, perhaps, for Racing Point’s direct competitors Ferrari, McLaren and Renault F1: Otmar Szafnauer has announced that development of this year’s single-seater, the RP20, has already been halted.
Engineers’ efforts are now focused on next year’s 2021 F1 and have spent the two development tokens allocated by the FIA well to keep costs down. As required by the agreement reached between the teams during confinement, the future single-seater will be largely derived from the current single-seater.
“We stopped development of the RP20 a few weeks ago,” explains the team director.
“The engineers have designed a last evolution pack for the high speeds of Monza, then the car will not evolve any more. We did not have the final length of the calendar when we made our choice but our resources are limited anyway. . “
Doesn’t Szafnauer fear losing 3rd place in the constructors’ championship?
“If the other teams continue to develop their cars, they will obviously come closer and closer. They will be faster than us on some tracks. But it is a choice that we have to live with.”
“We have decided to move forward with the development design of the car for 2021, our first Aston Martin. We want to make a good entry into the championship for the brand that will be supporting us from January.”
