Formula 1 Introduces New Qualification Format Starting from Baku GP

What’s new in Formula 1 starting from the Baku GP. Just in Azerbaijan, a new qualification format should be tested. Qualifications that have always been under the magnifying glass, also thinking of the unsuccessful attempt at change in 2016.

According to reports Motorsport.comin the meeting of the Formula 1 Commission scheduled for next Tuesday, the team, FIA and Liberty Media representatives will formally formalize with their vote a decision already taken in recent days and which will be applied starting from next weekend’s Grand Prix.

The weekend format it will not change on Friday, proposing the canonical program foreseen for the weekends with the sprint race, i.e. the free practice session in the morning and the qualifying session in the afternoon. Unlike weekends with sprints, the results of the qualifying sessions will define the starting grid for the Grand Prix scheduled for Sunday.

The biggest news will be in the Saturday day. In place of the FP2 session, there will be a unprecedented qualifying round, which will define the starting grid of the afternoon sprint race. There are still no details regarding this round, but the most logical and probable hypothesis will be that of classic qualifications with three rounds and reduced duration. Two qualifying sessions that will put the teams in difficulty in managing the tires: each driver will have two sets of hard, four medium and six soft tires available for the weekend.
