There was some criticism of the Ferrari team’s strategy, wrong decisions caused the necessary irritation. However, Ferrari’s gamble paid off wonderfully in Monza. A fantastically estimated one-stopper for both drivers makes the McLaren team pale in comparison. Just like in 2019, Charles Leclerc does it again for Ferrari and wins the most important race for Ferrari in front of the frenzied tifosi. The McLaren team does not take Ferrari’s one-stopper into account and has to settle for second place for Oscar Piastri and third for Lando Norris, very disappointed. Kudos also to birthday boy Carlos Sainz who defends wonderfully against Piastri, which means that the Australian runs out of laps and time at the end to make it difficult for Leclerc. Realism from Max Verstappen who finishes sixth behind Lewis Hamilton. “It was another dramatic race, nothing went well, the strategy was not good and the pit stop was just crap. We have to be more on top of it, otherwise I can just stay home. If this continues I will not win another race this year”.
After the lights go out, the two McLaren drivers are allowed to fight together for the victory. If you are really going for the world championship, you don’t want the two cars to make it difficult for each other. After the second chicane, Oscar Piastri narrowly takes the lead from his teammate Norris. “If I had braked a millimeter later, we would both have crashed,” the Briton explains disappointedly after the race. “But he passed me and therefore deserves second place.” Piastri was surprised afterwards that the tires of both Ferraris, and especially those of Leclerc, held up. He also had doubts about their own strategy, and despite his second place, it still hurts him not to win here. Charles Leclerc had the same emotions as in 2019, but this win is very special. “Of course it is about the title, but I have won the most important races for me this season. My own home race in Monaco and here in front of all my Italian fans, that is of course very nice.”
