The reigning Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen will start Saturday’s sprint at the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix from pole position.

The Red Bull driver in the Friday qualifying at the circuit in Imola, Italy, pushed the leader of the series Charles Leclerc to Ferrari behind him, Lando Norris finished third in the cockpit of McLaren.

Qualification was marked by rain and accidents, stewards had to draw a red flag up to five times. “It was complicated today, it slipped a lot. I’m very happy with the pole position, it’s a good start to this weekend,” Verstappen told AFP, who defeated Leclerc by 779 thousandths of a second. Mercedes did not even reach the final stage of qualifying, Lewis Hamilton finished 13th. The sprint on Saturday will determine the starting order for Sunday’s race and the eight best riders will also score points in the World Championship standings.
