CANCÚN, Q. ROO. – Formula 1 and the International Automobile Federation (SON) could cancel, for the second consecutive year, the Grand Prix of Mexico. Due to the persistence and dangerousness of the advance of the coronavirus in their territories as a result of the holiday season.
The premier category of motorsports has three Grand Prix contemplated in the American continent, in the cities of Austin, Mexico and Rio de Janeiro, however, the situation in Latin America with the new wave of infections, has complicated the organization of the events.
As a preventive measure, steps have already been taken to prevent the pilots from traveling to the continent, where only the United States has made progress with the immunization of its population. In addition, steps have already been taken to take action in the event of a cancellation.
The routes of the Grand Prix of Turkey and Bahrain have been taken into account, as well as a third venue to be defined, to fill the empty space that could be left by the cancellations of the Grand Prix of Mexico and Brazil, which close the season of the Formula 1.
The cancellation would be made in advance, at least two months before the date established for the race. Mexico currently has a contract with Formula 1 to be hosts thanks to a new agreement signed in 2019 until 2022, with an approximate value of 35 million dollars per race.
The Mexican Grand Prix began selling tickets since last month. The organizers indicated that as of April, the tickets will present an increase in costs, compared to those of 2020, which was canceled due to the pandemic.
