For weeks, the Pole had negotiated a deal as a simulator driver with Haas-Ferrari and Racing Point. In the end, he made his way to Switzerland with the Polish mineral oil company Orlen and around 10 million euros.

The team registered with the FIA by Sauber Motorsport AG is now called Alfa Romeo Racing ORLEN.

«One of the best drivers»
The only Sauber winner from 2008 in Montreal (with BMW Power) was warmly welcomed in the Zurich Oberland. Chef Vasseur: «You don’t have to introduce this pilot. He was one of the best drivers in his first Formula 1 period. And his will to return after the serious rally accident is unique. His feedback is now priceless for us. Robert can help us make the difficult walk in midfield successful. »

The new Kubica workplace is inaugurated these days: the million-dollar racing simulator. There, where Kimi Raikkonen is surely not to be found very often … There, where the new C39 has to get rid of its surely occurring quirks. It is not yet clear whether Kubica will also be used in tests or on a GP Friday morning.

“The car was a bad design”
Many fans doubt Poland’s ability after the Williams season because he lost the team duel against George Russell 0:21. Kubica: «I remained loyal to the team all year round. But the car was a misconstruction. There was nothing to be done in the simulator either. And if you don’t trust the car, you risk less. As simple as that.”

Thanks to the Sauber double penalty in Hockenheim (illegal clutch system) Kubica slid from 12th to 10th place – in 2019 it was the only world championship point for the British team with 114 GP victories!

2008 with third place at Raikkonen
Kubica’s entry into Formula 1 took place in Hungary in 2006 – as the successor to Jacques Villeneuve, who was fired by BMW-Sauber! He was seventh, but disqualified for being underweight (empty fire extinguisher)!

Two races later he was third on the podium in Monza with Schumi and Raikkonen. In 2008 Kubica finished third with the Raikkonen World Cup. But at the end of 2009 Kubica had enough of the Zurich Oberland – especially from BMW. The Germans had always tried to bring their too slow darling Nick Heidfeld closer to Kubica with changes to the car. The Pole on BLICK: “It was very unprofessional and thus great results were given away!”

Alonso: “Kubica would have become world champion”
The Pole fled to Renault for two years, had a Ferrari preliminary contract. But in February 2011 a rally accident stopped him in northern Italy. His right hand can hardly be moved today. Fernando Alonso, his best Formula 1 buddy: “Without this drama, Kubica would certainly have been world champion.”
