This is new in the 2022 Formula 1 season
Formula 1 wants to be more exciting. To do this, she has given the future cars a general overhaul. The new generation of Formula 1 vehicles has gone through 7,500 simulations. There should be more duels on the asphalt in the future. But that’s not the only novelty in 2022.
A completely changed aerodynamic concept
Formula 1 should be more exciting. The gap between the leader and the last should shrink, the number of duels should increase significantly. It’s all behind the aerodynamic revolution. Fia and Formula 1 engineers ran 7,500 simulations and generated around half a petabyte of data, which corresponds to around a third of the ten billion photos on Facebook. Profound changes have come out. For example, the underbody is no longer flat, but curved and has air ducts. The front wing has been simplified, it consists of only four elements and is directly connected to the nose. There is also a new, curved rear wing, and the side pods have also been significantly overhauled. All this should ensure that there is less air turbulence at the rear. As a result, the pursuers should not lose as much downforce, stay closer to the front man and thus be able to offer the fans more action.
A German as F1 referee
After the controversial Formula 1 finale in Abu Dhabi, the world motorsport association Fia dismissed Michael Masi as race director. The Australian made controversial decisions that enabled Max Verstappen to overtake Lewis Hamilton. Masi is offered a new post. His duties are shared between the German Niels Wittich, formerly DTM race director, and Eduardo Freitas from Portugal. They will take turns and be supported as advisors by Fia veteran Herbie Blash. A virtual race control room will also be installed, similar to the video referee in soccer, which should also improve decision-making in direct contact with the race director. The radio traffic between race control and teams is no longer transmitted.
A reconditioned tire
One result of the technology revolution is the revised tire. Instead of the balloon-like 13-inch tires, which are almost never used on road cars anymore, 18-inch tires are used. Their profile is flat, which makes them look more modern. In addition, the hubcaps are back. There are also fenders over the front tires. These air guide elements mean there is less turbulence at the rear.
A Chinese in Formula 1 as a regular driver
This has never happened before. In Guanyu Zhou, for the first time, a Chinese gets a regular cockpit in Formula 1. Zhou replaces Antonio Giovinazzi from Italy at Alfa Romeo. Zhou has been driving in Formula 2 since 2019 and was also a Formula 1 test driver at Alpine. In the highest junior class, the 22-year-old from Shanghai finished third last season. “Being the first Chinese driver in Formula 1 is a breakthrough in the history of Chinese motorsport,” said Zhou, who was attracted to Formula 1 by a lavish dowry from his sponsors. Ma Qinghua was the first Chinese in Formula 1 in 2012, and it was never enough for him to race.
A Florida Grand Prix
Formula 1 is expanding in the USA. After the United States Grand Prix in Austin (Texas), the pinnacle of motorsport will be stopping off in Miami for the first time on May 8th. The city in Florida is the eleventh US location in Formula 1 history. The Miami Grand Prix has a ten-year contract. The course will be 5.41 kilometers long and will loop around Hard Rock Stadium, home of American football team Miami Dolphins.
A condensed weekend format
After the cancellation of the Russian Grand Prix, there are still 22 races on the calendar. In order not to further increase the strain on teams and employees, Formula 1 decided to adjust the weekend format. On Grand Prix weekends where no sprint is held, the first two one-hour practice sessions are scheduled for Friday afternoon. The media consultation hours, which were otherwise scheduled for Thursday, take place in the morning. This should relieve the teams, and the fans will be offered another three days of action on the asphalt.
