Maureen O’Dea Filip is a remarkable woman with a rich and inspiring life story. Born and raised in Gortnora, a small village in Claremorris, Maureen has traveled a long way from her humble beginnings. Today, she is a successful businesswoman and philanthropist, making a big impact in her adopted home of Queens, New York. As she continues to inspire others with her incredible work and dedication to the community, Maureen O’Dea Filip’s story is a testament to the power of hard work, perseverance, and the importance of giving back.


Maureen O’Dea Filip, a former resident of Gortnora, Claremorris, passed away peacefully on March 19th, 2023, in Queens, New York, after a brief illness. Fran, her loving husband, predeceased her. She is deeply mourned by her two sons, Vincent and Gregory, daughters-in-law Christina and Christine, grandchildren Stephanie, Matthew, Tyler, Erin, and the late Cassidy and Drew. Her siblings include her sister, Nancy Golding from Balla, and two late brothers, Tommie O’Dea from Claremorris and Francis O’Dea from Gortnora. Many nieces, nephews, and friends will also miss her dearly.

Maureen loved her Irish heritage and was an active member of The Mayo Society of New York, known for her personal touches and organizational skills. The society awarded her with the Mayo Woman of the Year twice for her tremendous contribution. Her family’s ties to Ireland were crucial to her, and she helped several young people, including her family members, who emigrated to the US, find jobs, and accommodation.

Maureen’s visitation will be at Papavero Funeral Home, 72-27 Grand Avenue, Maspeth, NY 11378, on March 22, 2023, from 2 o’clock to 7 o’clock. Funeral services will be held in a Mass of Christian Burial, which will take place at St. Adalbert’s Church, 52-29 83rd Street, Elmhurst, NY 11373, from 10 o’clock to 11 o’clock on Thursday morning, March 23, 2023. The Graveside Service will be conducted at St. John’s Cemetery, 80-01 Metropolitan Avenue, Middle Village, NY 11379, on March 23, 2023, at 11.15.

In addition to caring deeply for her family and community, Maureen Filip inspired and helped many people throughout her life. As a devoted member of The Mayo Society of New York, she worked tirelessly to promote Irish culture and heritage. Maureen will be missed by all who knew her, and her legacy will continue through her loved ones’ memories.
