Formerly Bank Bankrupt, Now BPR Lestari Prints Assets of IDR 7.7 Trillion

Jakarta: Entering the age of 22 years and under the auspices of the Lestari Group, BPR Lestari spreads its wings throughout Java and Bali with total assets of IDR 7.7 trillion. BPR Lestari is able to offer products and facilities that can compete with big banks as well as dispel the stigma of the general public that BPR is a small bank.

“The crisis will definitely continue, right now. We are in the process of breaking through the pandemic storm that has been going on for more than a year. But at this time we are actually more productive with innovations and digital products that have been launched,” said Lestari Group Chairman Alex P Chandra, in his written statement, Friday, July 2, 2021.

In the future, he hopes, BPR Lestari can be on par with big well-known banks in Indonesia. “We have big dreams, so that BPR will also be considered equal to other commercial banks. I’ll let you know the plan later,” he said.

The achievement of BPR Lestari being able to print assets of IDR 7.7 trillion is not an easy matter. Alex had to risk all his capital and career to buy a bank that was almost bankrupt. “BPR Sri Artha Lestari at that time only had Rp. 300 million in assets. Bad debts were almost 70 percent,” he said.

The first four years turned out to be a year full of struggles for Alex and his comrades in arms. At that time, there were no transactions and even job vacancies were ignored. “Finding customers is difficult, looking for employees is also not there who want to work with me,” he said.

Alex admitted that it was very difficult to build public trust. “Yes, the first to believe in me are just family and relationships. It’s hard to find customers,” said Alex.

The revival momentum emerged in 2003 when a customer entrusted him with placing a deposit of IDR 25 million. His tenacity brings a breath of fresh air. Two years later, or to be precise in 2005, BPR Lestari managed to penetrate Rp54 billion in assets.

I see the light at the end of the tunnel,” he concluded.
