EL NUEVO DAILY, NEW YORK — No one has won more games in October than Andy Pettitte, making the former left-handed pitcher and fan favorite an ideal addition to help the Yankees prepare for the final stretch of the postseason race.
Pettitte has returned to the Yankees as a consultant, MLB.com confirmed Sunday. News of Pettitte’s return was first reported by NJ Advance Media.
Pettitte, 51, will serve as a sort of consultant to manager Aaron Boone, supplementing the input of pitching coach Matt Blake and the club’s other pitching coaches.
Pettitte’s return to the organization, for which he pitched from 1995 to 2003 and again from 2007 to 2013 (he did not play in the 2011 season after an early retirement attempt), follows the recent hiring of hitting coach Sean Casey, who played 12 years in the majors and has been well received by hitters.
Like adviser Nick Swisher, who is with the team this weekend in New York, Pettitte is expected to attend some — but not all — of the club’s major league games. Pettitte and his family reside in Texas.
However, any hours that Pettitte can offer will be valuable. He’ll work with a pitching staff led by ace Gerrit Cole (a self-described Pettitte fan), plus left-handers Carlos Rodón and Néstor Cortés, the latter of whom made a minor-league rehab outing Sunday for Double-A Somerset in Hartford.
One of the most popular players of the team’s last great dynasty and a member of the Yankees’ “Core Four” who won five World Series rings, Pettitte posted a career record of 256-153 with a 3.85 ERA in 531 MLB games (521 starts) for the Yankees and Astros. He holds the postseason records for wins (19), starts (44) and innings pitched (276.2).
