“Former WWE Wrestler Virgil Passes Away at 61”

Former WWE wrestler Virgil, known for his role as the silent but imposing bodyguard of “The Million-Dollar Man” Ted DiBiase, has passed away at the age of 61. The news was confirmed by wrestling referee Mark Charles III, a close friend of Jones, who shared the sad news on social media. Jones, who was also known by other ring names such as Vincent, Soul Train Jones, and more, had a successful career in the wrestling industry that spanned from 1985 to his full-time retirement in 2000.

Jones’ journey into sports entertainment began after a chance encounter with pioneering Black wrestler Tony Atlas. He made his debut in a regional promotion in Memphis under the name “Soul Train Jones” and worked there for two years before catching the attention of the national company, World Wrestling Federation (WWF). It was in WWF that he rose to prominence as Virgil, the intimidating bodyguard of Ted DiBiase.

As Virgil, Jones became an integral part of DiBiase’s Millionaire Inc. stable. Always seen wearing a tuxedo top with the sleeves cut off and holding either fanned-out $100 bills or DiBiase’s prized Million-Dollar Championship, Virgil provided an imposing presence behind his boss. He often faced off against DiBiase’s adversaries, including legendary wrestlers like Hulk Hogan and Randy “The Macho Man” Savage.

Jones remained with WWF until 1995 before joining World Championship Wrestling (WCW) alongside DiBiase, Hogan, and Savage. In WCW, he took on the persona of Vincent and served as the muscle for the New World Order stable. His tenure with WCW lasted until the promotion’s dissolution in 2000.

Unfortunately, Jones had been battling health issues in recent years. In the summer of 2022, he revealed that he had been diagnosed with dementia and had already suffered two massive strokes. Despite his health struggles, Jones continued to make sporadic appearances in the wrestling world until 2020.

The passing of Virgil, or Michael Jones, as he was known outside the ring, has left a void in the wrestling community. Fans and fellow wrestlers have expressed their condolences and shared memories of his contributions to the industry. Jones’ legacy as a formidable bodyguard and a beloved figure in the wrestling world will be remembered by many.

As we bid farewell to Virgil, we reflect on his impact and the mark he left on the wrestling industry. His presence alongside Ted DiBiase will forever be etched in the memories of fans who witnessed the ’80s boom period of WWE. May his memory be eternal, and may his family find solace in the outpouring of love and support from the wrestling community. Rest in peace, Virgil.
