The former wrestler Plamen Penev may have died of mechanical asphyxia, i.e. suffocation when the policemen forcibly removed him from his car in Stara Zagora. This is clear from a statement from the city prosecutor’s office.
A forensic medical examination was appointed for the death of Penev, which was assigned to a team of three forensic doctors in Plovdiv.
The man died on December 30 when he was chased by police patrols who responded to a report of an argument between him and a group of youths.
Penev died after disobeying a police order to stop and was chased through the streets of Stara Zagora.
After the case was reported to the prosecutor on duty from OP-Stara Zagora, actions were immediately taken with a view to clarifying the objective truth.
Work on clarifying the case continues, a large volume of evidence is being collected for a possible crime under Article 123 of the Criminal Code – for causing death due to professional negligence on the part of police officers.
A team of supervising prosecutors from the District Prosecutor’s Office-Stara Zagora supervises the procedural actions. The investigation itself was commissioned by the I.F. chief prosecutor of the Republic of Bulgaria of a team of investigators at the National Investigation Service, Sofia. In the event that sufficient evidence is gathered, charges will be brought against all responsible persons.
