Former world champion Toni Kroos is critical of the change of many footballers to Saudi Arabia and rules out such a step for himself.
The human rights situation in the country is “one thing that would prevent me from making such a change,” the 33-year-old Real Madrid midfielder told Sports Illustrated magazine. Everyone has to make this decision for themselves. But it becomes difficult “when players who are in the middle of their careers, who have the quality to play for top clubs in Europe, decide to make such changes,” said Kroos.
It’s “just about the money”
“And then they say that football is played there with ambition – and it’s all about the money,” criticized the 106-time national player. Kroos had recently extended his expiring contract with Real by a year until June 30, 2024. The 2014 world champion is entering his tenth season with the successful Spanish club. In 417 games so far, he has won 20 titles with Real, including four times the Champions League alone, and he has a total of five triumphs in the premier class. In terms of titles, he is by far the most successful German soccer professional.
After the end of his career, Kroos wants to stay in Madrid with his family for the time being. “The first few years you say to yourself: This is a nice adventure in Madrid. And at the same time you think about when to go back to Germany because it’s home, the family lives there, »said Kroos. After nine years, that’s a different story. “Life in general in Madrid is nice, we have set everything up so that it suits us well,” said Kroos.
