Former world champion pole vaulter, Canadian Sean Barber, died at the age of 29 at his home in Texas, his agent announced.
Barber won the world title at the World Cup in Beijing in 2015, by crossing the 5.90-meter barrier, and in the same year he returned and won gold at the Panamerican Games in Toronto.
His agent, Paul Doyle, announced via a message on Instagram the death of the Canadian hero, without providing details about the circumstances of his death.
“A friend who will never be forgotten,” he wrote on his official website, which is affiliated with Doyle Management. “Canadian Olympic pole vault champion Sean Barber has passed away.”
Barber still holds the Canadian indoor record with 6 metres, and outdoor with 5.93 metres.
“Shaun also qualified for the pole vault final at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro,” Doyle continued. “We will miss him very much.”
Barber, who held dual American and Canadian citizenship, surprised everyone by winning the gold medal in the World Athletics Championships in 2015 at the age of 21, beating the German Rafael Holzdeby and the Frenchman Renaud Lavillenie, the most prominent candidate at the time to win the title.
