Former war commander Russia Of UkraineGeneral “Armageddon” Sergei Surovikin, was removed from his post as head of the space troop.
Surovikin’s dismissal has not been officially announced by Moscow, but several Russian nationalist military blogs have reported on Surovikin’s replacement.
He is said to have remained on duty at the Ministry of Defense after being removed.
Reported ReutersSurovikin was the commander-in-chief of the Russian military in Ukraine from October 2022 to January 2023.
He was the commander who ordered the withdrawal of Russian troops from the southern Ukrainian city of Kherson in November 2022.
There has been no official confirmation of the report, although Russian-language media outlet RBC also reported that Surovikin had been removed from office.
“General of the Army Sergei Surovikin has been removed from his post in connection with a switch to another job and is under the control of [Kementerian Pertahanan],” RBC wrote.
One local media source said Surovikin was currently on “short leave”.
Meanwhile, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported that Surovikin’s position was replaced by a commander of the Russian Air Force.
“Former Chief of the Air and Space Forces of Russia Sergei Surovikin has now been removed from his post, while Chief of the Main Staff of the Air Force Colonel General Viktor Afzalov has temporarily replaced him,” RIA Novosti reported.
Surovikin has not been seen in public since the brief rebellion of Wagner Group mercenaries and their leader Yevgeny Prigozhin in late June. Surovikin was accused of being one of Prigozhin’s allies.
During the uprising, Surovikin did appear in a short video urging Prigozhin to step down.
But after the Wagner incident, Russian news reports and foreign media said that Surovikin was under investigation for his possible involvement in the uprising.
Surovikin himself was nicknamed “General Armageddon”, during Russia’s military intervention in the civil war in Syria.
