If it is up to the voter, former VVD member and Bredanaar Klaas Dijkhoff (42) may well take over from Mark Rutte. But on Monday evening he announced in the talk show Op1 that he is not available as a successor to the prime minister who announced his departure earlier in the day.
From a poll of One today it appears that a large part of the voters would like it if Klaas Dijkhoff becomes prime minister. 90 percent of VVD voters saw him as the party’s dream list leader and more than 45 percent of voters saw him as Rutte’s ideal successor.
Full-time politician
But now Dijkhoff has announced that he does not want to return to politics yet. “One of the reasons voters say they appreciate me is my honesty. I have honestly stated from the start that I do not want to be a full-time politician for the next fourteen years,” he says on Monday evening in the talk show Op1.
Dijkhoff says it has been a personal consideration: “I want to be a father and a good husband. At the moment that is not compatible with the time that you as prime minister always have to be available.”
Unpredictable
Dijkhoff was a member of the House of Representatives for the VVD between 2010 and 2021. In 2021 he left politics to pay more attention to his family. He has not yet backed down from that decision. He has since started a consultancy firm.
Dijkhoff did not expect Rutte to leave politics either. “I didn’t predict it, but I knew it was coming, for the simple reason that you can’t always be prime minister,” says Dijkhoff in Op1.
