A neighbor of former volleyball player Walewska Oliveira, who died at the age of 43 after falling from the 17th floor of a building in São Paulo, raised another hypothesis about the causes of the fall and about an alleged farewell letter that would have been left by she. The case is being investigated by the police as a suicide, as the former athlete was alone. However, the victim’s family also do not believe that she could have thrown herself.
As revealed by columnist Fábia Oliveira, from “Metrópoles”, Walewska fell on the balcony of the apartment of this neighbor, who did not want to identify herself. The woman said she suspects that the former player, who was 1.90 meters tall, may have accidentally fallen, rather than thrown herself.
“The definitive report has not yet been released and there is a great possibility that she lost her balance and fell unintentionally, as the guardrail that is close to the table where she was sitting is very low and dangerous. If we consider her height, this hypothesis cannot be ruled out,” said the neighbor.
“I live in the building and followed part of this story, because, unfortunately, it fell in front of my apartment balcony. I haven’t spoken out until now out of respect for her family and friends, but in the face of so much speculation and analysis, I thought I should speak out,” she said.
The neighbor also gave her opinion on an alleged farewell letter that had been left by the former player, as reported by the police.
“There was a folder on the table with several papers that say they were goodbye letters. It could be, but it hasn’t been proven yet. They could have been notes for an interview she was going to give to SporTV. She entered the place long before the time of the accident and whoever was with her said that she was talking normally and seemed calm”, he highlighted.
Airplane pilot Wesley Oliveira, Walewska’s brother, told the UOL website that the family has not yet had access to this document. “We did not have access to this farewell letter. There’s no way to know if it really exists. There are several versions: she may have written the letter, someone may have written it for her or she may not even have a letter at all. My sister loved writing, would you know if she wasn’t writing things about her podcast? We will need to look for this in the investigation. You can’t really know if it was a goodbye letter,” she said.
According to Wesley, the hypothesis of suicide is not accepted by the family. “It’s hard to believe that someone so beautiful, so centered, so wonderful, did what they say she did. I don’t think it makes sense. She was very well, she loved living. It’s hard to believe this happened”, he highlighted.
Marriage crisis
The former player’s widower, real estate agent Ricardo Alexandre Mendes, said they were facing a crisis in their 20-year marriage and had even filed for divorce. He and Wal argued the night before her death and the woman was not happy with the end of the union.
“She questioned me that I was strange and distant, I replied that I couldn’t continue where there was no longer love between a man and a woman. She became introspective, stayed quiet and we went to sleep. We loved each other, I hoped she would accept the separation in a good way,” he said.
On the 21st, he went to work and, when he got home, he claims he didn’t know that the woman was in the building’s leisure area. On that date, at 6:07 pm, he received a cell phone message from her that said: “I love you. But, I think you’ve already made your decision.” Soon after, Ricardo replied: “I love you too”.
Shortly afterwards, he was informed that she had fallen from the 17th floor. “I arrived home after an intense day of work, I didn’t know that Wal had already arrived. The intercom rang, I didn’t answer it. Then came messages via WhatsApp from the condominium group, until the manager rang the doorbell at my house to inform me of the tragedy. My floor opened and I collapsed.”
The police reported that Wal was seen by witnesses, who did not notice any signs of concern. She sent her husband a cell phone message and, a few minutes later, the fall occurred. She was drinking alcohol and was alone in the building’s leisure area. Investigations remain ongoing at the 78th Jardins Police District.
Olympic champion
Walewska began her volleyball career at Minas Tênis Clube, in 1995, but also played for teams such as São Caetano and Osasco. Abroad, she was part of teams at Sirio Perugia (Italy), Grupo 2002 Murcia (Spain) and VC Zarechie Odintsovo (Russia).
The former athlete won Olympic gold with the team in Beijing, China, in 2008, and was also part of the team that won bronze in Sydney, Australia, in 2000.
The Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV) issued a note lamenting Walewska’s death. The entity highlighted the central’s titles and, on behalf of President Radamés Lattari, expressed solidarity with the family members.
