Former US Vice President Mike Pence has been subpoenaed in the judicial investigations into former President Donald Trump, according to several American news media.
ABC News and The New York Times, among others, rely on sources surrounding the investigations. However, special counsel Jack Smith, who oversees Trump investigations, has not responded and Pence is also still silent. The investigations focus, among other things, on Trump’s actions during the storming of the Capitol and how he handled confidential government documents after his presidency.
According to The New York Times, the Attorney General’s Office spent months negotiating with Pence’s legal team for a voluntary statement, but nothing came of it. That is why he would now be subpoenaed to tell more about how Trump behaved after it was known that he had lost the presidential election.
Trump believed that Pence, who was due to ratify the election results on January 6, should not recognize Biden’s win. Pence refused, saying it was illegal.
Subpoena is separate from Pence’s find documents
The subpoena is unrelated to the discovery of classified documents at Pence’s home. At the end of January, the documents were found in the home of the former US vice president. According to Pence’s attorney, the find was made by a lawyer hired by Pence to search several boxes of documents for potentially classified items. The former vice president is said to have hired the lawyer because of the recent finds of secret documents with former President Trump and President Biden.
