Marco Maciel was born in Recife in 1940. From a student leader, he rose to the position of vice president of the Republic in 1995.

The politician won his first election as a state deputy in the 1960s, and in the following election, in 1970, Maciel was elected federal deputy. In 1976 he was elected president of the Chamber of Deputies.

During the Geisel administration, Marco Maciel was chosen to take over the government of Pernambuco and, at the time, he created a project to combat the drought and gave priority to the Port of Suape, started during the government of Eraldo Gueiros.
