Former Vice President Mike Pence Announces Presidential Run, Challenging Former Boss Trump in 2022 Elections

Former Republican Vice President Mike Pence will run in next year’s US presidential election. The right-hand man of former President Donald Trump reported to the Election Commission on Monday.

The 63-year-old Pence wants to start his campaign for the primary elections with his Republican party on June 7. He becomes a direct competitor of his former boss. Trump announced at the end of last year that he would seek re-election.

During the Trump administration, Pence was a staunch ally. But that friendship broke down when Trump became irate over Pence’s affirmation of incumbent Democratic President Joe Biden’s 2020 victory. Trump did not resign himself to his defeat, and Pence gradually distanced himself from him.

Trump remains extremely popular with Republicans. More than half of the supporters want him to be their candidate. A few percent prefer Pence, according to the polls.
