The world overestimated Russia’s military potential and underestimated Ukraine’s capabilities, says Kurt Volker, former special representative of the US State Department for Ukraine.
Commenting on the Express, he noted that after 14 months of full-scale war, the Russian military was in “bad shape” and praised the Ukrainian defense forces’ chances of a successful counter-offensive.
“We saw how Russian intelligence misled Putin. We were misled too. Russia initially made significant gains in eastern Ukraine and towards Kiev. But the Ukrainians pushed them back. The Russians are no longer able to attack. We know they are trying to recruit more folks, we know they are trying to get equipment from Iran and North Korea. We know their armed forces are in bad shape on the ground and have no means to replenish. They also don’t have good leadership so it’s really a mess… Meanwhile the Ukrainians are gathering their own resources and preparing for a counteroffensive. It looks like it’s going to be a serious counteroffensive,” Volker said.
For a long time, the Ukrainian troops have been preparing for a large-scale counter-offensive with the aim of pushing back the enemy and liberating the entire territory of Ukraine. The counterattack is expected to begin soon.
