Former US President Faces Federal Trial for Illicit Possession of Pentagon Documents

The former president of the United States must appear before federal justice for the illicit possession of documents of the Pentagon. The date is set during the Republican primary, but before the national ballot.

A busy schedule for Donald Trump. A Florida federal judge has set the former US president’s trial for May 20, 2024, in the case of the classified documents he allegedly illegally withheld at the end of his term. A date which is before the national convention of the republicans, scheduled for the summer of 2024 and which will officially induct the candidate of his camp for the presidential election. The general election will be held in November.

Prosecutors had called for the trial to open in December, while defense lawyers argued for a trial after the November 2024 presidential election for which Donald Trump is a candidate.

Charged in mid-June with 37 counts including “unlawful withholding of national security information”, “obstructing justice” and “false testimony”, Donald Trump pleaded not guilty in federal court in Miami.

Leaving the White House, Donald Trump took with him entire boxes of documents. However, a 1978 law obliges all American presidents to transmit all of their e-mails, letters and other working documents to the National Archives.
