A New York jury recognized Donald Trump guilty of sexually abusing the columnist Jean Carroll in 1996, and to have defamed her by denying the facts. The plaintiff is awarded approximately $2 million in damages for her assault and battery claim and nearly $3 million for her defamation claim. The verdict was announced Tuesday by New York federal court in Manhattan after several hours of deliberation.
On the other hand, the jurors did not consider that there was sufficient evidence to qualify as rape the attack of which Jean Carroll claims to have been the victim. This verdict concerns a civil complaint, which means that Donald Trump has not been found guilty of any offense and does not face a prison sentence. “This verdict is a disgrace, a new episode of the greatest witch hunt of all time!“Reacted Trump on his Truth Social network after the announcement of the verdict. “I have absolutely no idea who this woman is.».

Jean Carroll publicly accused Donald Trump in 2019 of brutally assaulting and raping her in a dressing room at the luxury department store Bergdorf Goodman in Manhattan in the mid-1990s. She then sued the former president l last year, under a new law in New York State allowing victims of sexual assault to sue civilly and seek damages even if the legal time limit for filing a lawsuit penalty has expired. According to New York State law, sexual abuse is defined as subjecting a person to sexual contact without their consent, while rape is defined as sexual intercourse without consent.
Trump did not attend the trial, and did not come to testify, contenting himself with repeating that he had never sexually assaulted Jean Carroll and that he did not even know her.
In October 2022, Trump had previously released a statement on Truth Social calling the accusation “scam” and of “lie“. Her lawyers tried to question the veracity of the complainant.
Jurors allowed to identify themselves publicly
After the verdict was read, Judge Lewis Kaplan informed the jurors that they were now permitted to identify themselves publicly, if they wished, but advised against doing so. “I advise you not to identify yourself, not now and not for a long time“Judge Kaplan told them, and”if you choose to do so, I ask that you do not identify the other members of this jury“. Trump has previously faced multiple charges ranging from harassment to sexual assault, which he has always denied. Jean Carroll’s complaint is the first to succeed.
Donald Trump, accused of financial malfeasance in a separate case, could face new prosecutions, including for trying to overturn the 2020 election result, for his role in the attack on the Capitol in 2021, and for having kept after his departure from the White House classified documents, and refused to return them. So far, the former president does not seem to have suffered from these disputes with the justice, the republicans having rather considered that these cases were politically motivated. Candidate for the nomination of his party for the presidential election of 2024, Trump is ahead of all his potential opponents in all the latest national polls
