Former United States president Trump says on his social media channel Truth Social that he has been charged. He says the charges are “apparently” related to classified documents found at his Mar-a-Lago Florida estate last year.
Trump says he must report to court in Miami on Tuesday afternoon (local time). The prosecution has not yet commented or confirmed Trump’s words. His lawyers have not yet responded.
The indictment itself is still sealed, even Trump has not yet seen it. American media report that the charge probably consists of seven counts. Court records from last year indicate he may have committed several crimes, including obstruction, conspiracy and illegal preservation of sensitive documents.
“The corrupt Biden administration has informed my lawyers that I have been charged, apparently over the box hoax,” he writes. “I’m innocent!” he added.
Criminal investigation
Yesterday it became clear that he is the subject of a criminal investigation, but no charges have yet been made. He allegedly took confidential documents from the White House to his private quarters. In addition, he would have tried to prevent the authorities from finding the documents.
In August last year, federal authorities removed some 13,000 documents from Trump’s Florida estate. About a hundred of those documents were classified as secret. According to Trump, he had taken that classification off the documents during his time as president, but he has never provided evidence for that claim.
Other cases
Several lawsuits and investigations are pending against Trump. He is the first former president ever to face criminal charges. He is already being prosecuted for illegal payments to porn actress Stormy Daniels.
The state of Georgia has also been investigating for more than two years whether Trump illegally pressured officials to win the election. In addition, his business empire was found guilty of tax evasion this year and his role in the capitol storming in January 2021 is still under investigation.
In addition, Trump recently lost a civil lawsuit against writer E. Jean Carroll who accused him of sexual abuse. The former president must pay her the equivalent of 4.6 million euros in compensation.
