A former American ambassador has been arrested for allegedly spying for Cuba. Press agency AP reports that 73-year-old Manuel Rocha is suspected of passing sensitive information to the Cuban government.
Rocha’s arrest follows a long-running FBI investigation. The security service believes Rocha was a Cuban government spy.
Rocha was arrested in Miami on Friday and is scheduled to appear in court on Monday. The US Justice Department will argue that the former ambassador put Cuba’s interests above those of the United States. Rocha is likely to be accused of lobbying, but could also be charged with treason.
Treason is punishable by death. That’s less than thirty times in American history happened.
Rocha served as the U.S. ambassador to Bolivia from July 2000 to August 2002. During his diplomatic career he also worked in Cuba and other South and Central American countries.
The US and Cuba restored diplomatic ties in 2015. These were broken in 1961 as a result of the Cold War. Despite strengthening ties, there are still tensions between the countries.
