Three officials from the Administration of former President Donald Trump claimed responsibility for conceiving the controversial installation of buoys in the Rio Grande, the iconic border between Texas and Mexico. As revealed by three former officials of that administration in interviews with NBC News, the original idea of erecting these floating barriers was conceived by them as part of an effort to curb illegal immigration.
The buoys, which since their implementation have been the subject of harsh criticism from the left, as well as legal actions promoted by the Department of Justice (DOJ), were erected within the framework of the so-called “Operation Lone Star”, a state initiative promoted by the governor of Texas, Greg Abbott (R), to combat the flow of undocumented immigrants. Despite legal threats from Washington, Abbott has rejected the idea of removing these barriers.
The inspiration behind this controversial project was traced by Rodney Scott, who was the former head of the US Border Patrol. Scott, in early 2020, found inspiration in similar buoy systems used in other countries to protect vessels in ports. This approach led him to examine various requests from contractors for possible buoy barrier systems along California’s Pacific coast and on the Rio Grande’s own border. “It’s an impediment,” Scott said in an interview with NBC News. They “sold” us this idea, referring to the deterrent impact that the presence of these buoys was intended to generate. While the barrier project was halted in March 2020, one of Scott’s associates, Mike Banks, later joined Abbott’s management as border officer in January. However, the implementation of these barriers has aroused strong criticism and has been described as inhumane. The tragic evidence of this claim became clear when two bodies were found floating near these buoys earlier this month.
