AFPSidney Powell at a press conference in 2020

A day before she was due to appear in court, Sidney Powell, former lawyer for Donald Trump, pleaded guilty to complicity in conspiring to have the election results in the state of Georgia annulled.
In exchange, she will no longer have to appear before a jury, but will receive six years’ probation and a fine. She must also testify in the cases against the other suspects, including probably her former client former President Trump. She must also write a letter of apology to the residents of Georgia.
After the 2020 election, Powell was one of Trump’s most visible lawyers arguing that the election was stolen. On behalf of team Trump, she wrongly accused voting machine manufacturer Dominion of fraud.
Invaded election office
In her confession, she admits that she, together with members of the local Republican party and a handful of Trump supporters, entered the elections office of the conservative municipality of Coffee County in January 2021. There they copied ballots and information with the aim of demonstrating that the system was set up in such a way that Trump had to lose. That has never been proven.
Powell’s settlement with prosecutors states that she hired computer data researchers. In Coffee County, she allegedly illegally granted access to government computers for the purpose of “investigating voters’ personal information, knowing that such an investigation was done without official authorization.”
Powell is the second suspect in the Georgia conspiracy case to plead guilty. According to legal experts, that was also the intention of prosecutor Fani Willis. She wanted to file a conspiracy case in the hope that several people would cooperate in order to gather more evidence against the creators of the plan.
Although Trump’s name is not mentioned in the settlement, it is expected that Powell will eventually have to testify in his case.
Powell’s guilty plea is seen as a major breakthrough for the Public Prosecution Service because she can now make statements about meetings that took place behind closed doors in the aftermath of the elections.
Other suspects
A co-suspect who had to appear in court with her tomorrow has not yet reached a plea agreement. This Kenneth Chesebro is suspected of participating in Trump’s plan to appoint Republican electors to torpedo Biden’s win.
If Chesebro also pleads guilty, it would mean prosecutors wouldn’t have to reveal what evidence they have tomorrow. This allows them to keep their powder dry for the bigger suspects in this extensive case, such as Rudy Giuliani and Donald Trump. They are facing thirteen charges for illegally trying to manipulate the election results.
