Former Trump attorney Trump Cohen released early because of coronavirus | NOW

Michael Cohen, former U.S. President Donald Trump’s lawyer, will be released from prison on Thursday, several report American media. Cohen is allowed to serve the rest of his prison sentence at home because of the coronavirus.

Cohen was sentenced to three years in prison in 2018, including for committing campaign finance fraud. He paid hush money to two women during the 2016 US presidential campaign. He also lied to Congress about plans for a Trump Tower in Russia.

Cohen was Trump’s first ‘initiate’ to be convicted of an investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 elections. He was originally scheduled to be released in November 2021.

The former US president’s lawyer was told in April that he could sit the rest of his sentence at home after a fourteen-day quarantine. Earlier this month, Trump’s former campaign leader Paul Manafort was also released early due to concerns about the corona virus.

American prisons are a source of infection

Several infections with the COVID-19 virus have been identified in a prison in New York State where Cohen is being held. New York is the epicenter of the virus in the United States.

To date, 2,265 inmates and 188 staff have been tested positive for the corona virus in U.S. prisons. 58 prisoners died from the effects of the virus.
