BANGKOK, KOMPAS.com – Former Thai Prime Minister (PM) Thaksin Shinawatra received a reduction in his prison sentence from eight years to one year by the King of Thailand on Friday (1/9/2023).
It comes just a day after the 74-year-old billionaire applied for a royal pardon on corruption and abuse of office charges.
Thaksin, who was elected prime minister twice and was ousted in a 2006 military coup, was jailed last week soon after returning to the kingdom for the first time since 2008.

Partial prison pardon for Shinawatra from King Maha Vajiralongkorn was officially confirmed by the Royal Gazette.
The announcement alluded to Shinawatra’s devotion to the country in the past as prime minister.

Princess Bajrakitiyabha, the eldest daughter of the King of Thailand fainted due to heart problems according to the Thai royal palace on Thursday (5/12/2022). He has been unconscious for three weeks.
“He was loyal to the institution of the monarchy. While on trial, he respected the justice system,” the statement said, noting that Thaksin also suffered from many health problems.
“His Majesty the King has granted him amnesty and reduced the sentence of Thaksin Shinawatra, the prisoner, to one year in prison, so that he can use his skills and experience to further develop the country,” the statement added.

His return on Tuesday (29/8/2023) coincided with the return of the Pheu Thai party to government in alliance with pro-military parties, leading many to conclude that an agreement had been reached to reduce his term.
“I congratulate the Thaksin family on this news,” said Thailand’s new Prime Minister, Srettha Thavisin, of the Pheu Thai Party.
“His family must be happy. I heard he has high blood pressure. They must be calm,” he added to reporters
Thaksin’s daughter, Paetongtarn, said her family was grateful for the generosity of the King of Thailand.
“Thaksin Shinawatra will use his expertise, knowledge and skills to benefit the country, society and people, and will serve the institution of monarchy forever,” he wrote on Instagram.
