Former Tesla employee awarded $3.2 million in racial discrimination settlement

Former Tesla worker Owen Diaz accused the company of inaction when he repeatedly complained to managers that workers at the Fremont, California plant frequently use racist slurs and swastikas.

The company said it does not tolerate workplace discrimination and takes employee complaints seriously.

“Diaz was a conflict worker who exaggerated his claims of emotional distress,” Tesla attorney Alex Spiro said in a statement.

Bernard Alexander, Diaz’s attorney, called for a message to be sent to Tesla and other large companies that they would be held accountable for failing to tackle discrimination.

“Diaz’s view of the world has changed forever. This is what happens when you deprive a person of security,” Alexander said.
