Syrians in the Netherlands run the risk of running into their former prison executioner from Syria on the street. These are people who carried out torture and torture in Syrian prisons. Syrians, experts and involved organizations suspect that several executioners of the regime of President Bashir Al Assad are walking around freely here.
How many such executioners are involved, according to Fidelity in Argos not completely clear. A group of Syrians in the Netherlands, victims of the torture in the notorious prisons of Al Assad, claim that they have already tracked down at least thirteen executioners living in the Netherlands.
Professor Ugur Üngör, who works at the Institute for War, Holocaust and Genocide Studies, suspects that the number is much higher. He conducts research into both the perpetrators and victims of the Syrian regime. “There are more than rumors about perpetrators of all kinds, also in the Netherlands,” says Üngör Fidelity.
Üngör estimates that there are now between fifty and a hundred such perpetrators. According to the professor, many of them worked in the prisons of the Al Assad regime.
The Immigration and Naturalization Service (IND) calls the findings “worrying”. The IND says that in the past decade it has prevented the arrival of at least fifty Syrians because of possible involvement in war crimes.
If there are indications of such a person in the Netherlands, the IND can do a quick scan of telephones and computers.
