Former Syrian PM accused of being a double agent of Israel, Britain and …

DAMASCUS – Former Prime Minister (PM) Syria Jamil Mardam was accused of being a double agent working with Britain, France and Israel.

Report released Haaretz it was the first accusation ever made public.

Jamil Mardam served as prime minister of Syria in the late 1930s and mid 1940s. He reportedly worked with the British intelligence agency MI6 in early 1945.

“He was then blackmailed into working for the French intelligence service, which used Israeli intelligence agents as the handlers,” said Professor Meir Zamir of Ben-Gurion University in the Negev. (Also Read: Putin: Conflicts in Libya, Yemen and Syria Spread Terrorism)

Eliahu Sasson controlled Mardam and acted as intermediary, sending information and documents from Mardam, which were sent via the post office in Cairo at the time, to French intelligence. (See Infographic: ASEAN Summit Held amidst Global Power Upheaval)

“Mardam provided important information to Israeli Zionist leader David Ben-Gurion about various British military plans to prevent the creation of a Jewish state,” said Zamir. (Watch Video: Typhoon Vamco Lets the Philippines, 32 Villages Submerged by Flood)

Various plans were drawn up, including declaring the militant group Haganah a terrorist organization and forcing it to be disarmed; permits the establishment of small Jewish entities in Palestine; and implement the “Greater Syria” plan.

Mardam, according to the report, has been a major supporter of the “Greater Syria” idea that would see French troops expelled from their mandate.
