The former Swedish star referee Peter Fröjdfeldt, 59, has been given a top job, according to Greek media.

The task is also called one of the most difficult in the world of football – as head referee.

Big club Olympiakos is already raging against the appointment of the Swede.

Greek football has for many years had major problems with the integrity of the referees and the influence and influence of the clubs in the appointment of referees.

Therefore, foreign referees have been appointed and also foreign referees who often referee matches in the Greek league since 2018 following demands from Uefa and Fifa.

Swedish Leif Lindberg, called the world’s best linesman in the early 2000s, has previously been hired by the Greek referee committee.

Now the former star referee Peter Fröjdfeldt gets the even bigger task as head referee for the entire Greek professional football, states DNA.

Bennett resigned immediately

Fröjdfeldt succeeds the Englishman Steve Bennett, who resigned with immediate effect two weeks ago as head referee. Bennett had appointed a Greek team of referees to officiate the Atenderbyt between AEK and Panathinaikos.

A decision made by the president of the Greek Football Association, Takis Baltakos, threw in the bin and instead turned to Uefa for a foreign refereeing team.

Peter Fröjdfeldt is said to have applied for the job as chief judge in Greece as early as 2020, but did not get the assignment.

Now the decision to appoint him as the new head referee was announced at lunchtime on Tuesday after a meeting of the Greek Football Association where the Swede was voted in with the numbers 8-2.

The big Greek club Olympiakos is already raging against the appointment of Fröjdfeldt.

Raging towards Fröjdfeldt

Olympiakos’ powerful president, Vangelis Marinakis, is reported to say about the appointment of the Swede:

“Once again, I am outraged by Baltako’s tactics and lies. An unclear and illegal process has been initiated contrary to what we agreed on within the Superliga organization. We wanted to turn to Uefa, who know European football best, and ask them for three candidates and their CVs. But Baltakos never did.”

“He dug up – because that’s what his masters told him – a man who we rejected in 2020 and who hasn’t worked (as a referee) since 2019. He (Fröjdfeldt) has had no contact with European football since then and only works locally where he lives. (…) Of course I voted against,” says Marinakis according to Sport-FM.

Arena manager in Eskilstuna

Peter Fröjdfeldt was named Sweden’s best referee in 2004. In 2008, he was named world referee of the year by Worldreferee.com.

Fröjdfeldt put the whistle on the shelf in 2008 and worked until 2019, in parallel with the civilian profession as arena manager in Eskilstuna municipality, as referee coach.

Sportbladet has contacted Peter Fröjdfeldt for a comment.
