Khartoum: Ahmed Haroun, the top official of Sudan’s former government, who was indicted by the International Criminal Court (ICC) for war crimes, was released from Khartoum prison. It is also reported to be a jailbreak. Ahmad Haroon was the leader of the ruling National Congress Party. Haroun was arrested in 2019 following the collapse of former President Omar al-Bashir’s regime due to a popular uprising and a military coup. He has more than 40 war crimes charges against him. The main crimes include violence, murder and rape during his tenure as Sudan’s Minister of Interior and Human Affairs.
Sudan has been in a state of civil war for the past two weeks due to clashes between two military factions. About 500 people were killed and more than 4,000 were injured.
Haroon’s message has come out saying that he shifted to another place with the help of the officials after the conflict broke out due to shortage of water and food in the jail and that he will appear before the authorities if things become normal. There are unconfirmed reports that former President Bashir has also been released from prison.
International media reports that both sides are respecting the ceasefire that was established yesterday. The ceasefire is for 72 hours. The US authorities had informed that it came into effect from midnight on Monday. Foreign countries continue to evacuate their citizens.
Britain has already evacuated 301 people, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s spokesman said. The plane that flew from Sudan with 245 people landed in Paris the other day. Of these, 195 are French nationals.
Khamis Jauda, a medical student from Palestine, said that although he had experienced many war-like situations, he had never seen what happened in Khartoum. She also commented that everyone in Sudan is always worried about death.
