Former great striker Ruud van Nistelrooy stayed only one season as coach of the Dutch football club PSV Eindhoven.

The currently 46-year-old former representative of the Netherlands decided to leave the bench of the vice-champion one duel before the end of the 2022/2023 season, because he allegedly does not feel enough support in the team. Van Nistelrooy took over the team before the current year and led it to win the national cup, in the domestic league, PSV players are in 2nd place behind the champion Feyenoord Rotterdam. During the next weekend, they will play at Alkmaar and a draw will ensure them the position of vice-champion, regardless of the result of the currently third-placed Ajax Amsterdam.

Ruud van Nistelrooy had a meeting with the club’s management, who wanted him to continue working with the A-team until the end of the season, i.e. until Sunday. “On Wednesday morning, Van Nistelrooy announced to the executive team and the players that he is stepping down with immediate effect because he does not feel there is enough support in the organization,” stated the club in the statement and added: “For Sunday’s duel against AZ Alkmaar, the team will be led by Fred Rutten.”

If the PSV players occupy the second place in the league table, they will get the right to start in the 3rd round of Champions League qualification. They will have to beat two opponents to enter the group stage.

Ruud van Nistelrooy was a feared striker in the past, he scored goals like on a treadmill in PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United, Real Madrid and Hamburg, he also played for Málaga, Den Bosch and Heerenveen.
