Former Sporting Player and Under-20 World Champion João Oliveira Pinto Dies at 52

Sporting today issued a note of condolence over the death of João Oliveira Pinto, a former footballer trained at the Lions and who was the under-20 world football champion for Portugal in 1991, who died at the age of 52.

“To family and friends, Sporting extends its deepest condolences, without forgetting to praise and thank you for the years of effort and dedication to the club”, can be read in the note published today by the ‘green and whites’.

Trained at the Lisbon club, João Oliveira Pinto later played for many clubs, such as Vitória de Guimarães, Estoril Praia, Gil Vicente, Sporting de Braga, Farense, Marítimo and Académica, as well as other clubs such as Atlético, Imortal, Amora, Sesimbra and Alfarim.

Today, Alfarim remembered precisely this farewell to their career in that club, in the “best season”, 2008/09, while Sesimbra remembered the “great player and great man”, observing a minute of silence in their next game.

Farense, Gil Vicente and Atlético also published notes of condolence for the former footballer.

Former footballer João Oliveira Pinto, under-20 World champion in 1991, died today at the age of 52, victim of a prolonged illness, the president of the Professional Football Players Union (SJPF) confirmed to Lusa.

João Oliveira Pinto, one of the under-20 World champions of the so-called ‘Golden Generation’ in Lisbon in 1991, was trained at Sporting, played for several clubs and was also European runner-up under-21 champion.
